Scary Movies

Link: The Haunting 1963  Check it out.

I just recently found this list of Martin Scorsese's 11 scariest horror films of all time. I know the man hasn't produced a lot of note lately, but I love his list. Most are black and white, low tech-compared to this day. My favorite scary movies are low on special effects and high in tension and the best scare of all, (where is Vincent  Price when I need him to narrate?) the fear of the unknown. I can't wait to check out the other's on Scorsese's list that I haven't seen.

Funny thing is that I am a child of the late 70's early 80's, during the last heyday of Halloween before parents became too paranoid and Halloween trick or treats started taking place at trunk or treats. Ugh... Things are improving though. I wasn't allowed to see the slasher movies until I was older, but my mum introduced my sister and me to some of the early greats such as The Haunting and The Uninvited. Perhaps that is the reason why atmosphere is so important to me in my creations.

I know several people will want to hang me for it, but these kinds of fear of the unknown movies made me very picky about horror and I am almost always disappointed with the genre. Very rarely do I actually get caught up in a movie like I did The Haunting 1963, or The Ring. The last one I loved was the Blair Witch Project. There, I said it. I loved the Blair Witch Project.

  1. Really? Blair Witch? :D

Someday I will have to watch the whole thing...made it through about 20 minutes and went....no, can't do this :D

But the Haunting is one of my favorite horror movies....ever. And I agree with you, grew up on the B&W horror....Universal Monster movies have had a huge influence on my yard haunt......still love those movies. Call me sentimental....but I do :)

    Thanks for sharing.

    Back to prop building.

    Cheers!

  2. I agree that mounting tension and subtle unease is the scariest. No modern movie has scared me since I watched The Ring, and that was probably 10 years ago!

  3. Just the scene in The Haunting where she hears something terrible happening in the next room, and the wall has a face. It's very difficult to achieve that sense of the uncanny, because film is such an explicit medium.

  4. I totally feel you about Blair Witch. Seeing a person standing in a corner still kind of freaks me out. Last time I saw that it turned out to be a couple. And they still scared me.

Now I want to watch all of these. Thanks!

  5. i'm with you on fear of the unknown. i've had a really hard time getting scared by horror movies in the last 10 years. maybe i should check out the haunting.

i'd never even heard of trunk or treats before. that sounds pretty lame.

  6. That's my favorite kind of horror movie too. I kind of avoided watching any horror for a long time, believing that after "Poltergeist" it had all turned to the blood-and-guts variety. I think "Sixth Sense" changed it for me. "The Others" was really good too. I have "The Innocents" (1961) on my coffee table to watch any day now. The cover for "The Haunting" looks familiar- if it's not already on my Amazon Wishlist, I'll definitely add it.
