Dark Halloween

I officially spent 4 hours getting all my 100+ spotlights right, Everything was working, I even got crappy video. Then something went horribly wrong and the lights went out. I had so many kids go by today to check out "the show" and I don't know it the lights will even work tomorrow. I am about as bummed as I can be right now. Something is horribly wrong. I even smelled melted plastic in my project enclosure. If I wan't aware of much more horrible things in the world, I'd cry.

I got blackout contacts for this years banshee/la llorona costume. This was a trial run with some of the makeup. I'm so beyond the crappy "sexy" costumes.

Down to the Wire

I just applied the first of three coats of sealant to this guy. Just now. His partner will need to be finished for next year. I'll paint him tomorrow and set him up to dry under the awning over the front porch. I have yet to re-wire my project enclosure for the light show. Tonight we get all the props and lights down out of the garage rafters so I can get to work after work.

One of the reasons I'm so far behind was that we went on our haunted vacation to So Cal. Flash photography wasn't allowed in the mazes and some of the rides were water rides, so photography was out in most cases. I did get a few shots of props that were set up at the parks though.
Dinner at Universal
At the gate
The night was sold out in advance, we got in early
It got dark by the time we hit the lower lot where Pyramid Head was waiting
He and his faceless knife wielding nurse friends had fun with the crowd
Yes it's dark and grainy, but I let people go ahead of us at The Walking Dead maze to get this awesome photo. I tried to use the fence as a tripod.
Some decorations

Parting shot when we left Universal after screaming my head off and giggling hysterically for several hours. We had an amazing time.

Happy Haunting!

I'll try to get some photos before the big night. I really want to try to get decent video.

Latest WIP

I've been wanting to do a version of Pumpkinrot's sentinels. Gosh, I remember being copied as a kid in art class in middle school and High School. Nobody gave me credit. Apparently I can't think of a better way to make these guys, so I hope he finds my final result to be O.K. I've had nothing but trouble mounting the "head" to the "body". Kyle helped me a bunch with this one. The other one is still drying on the porch with no arms. Dang, I have a ton of work to do. Here's the inspiration:
Again, check out Mr. Rot.

Great Mix Tape for Halloween

Click here for Pumpkinrot's 2010 Halloween mix. As he put it, it's meant to be listened to and not watched. This was my favorite blog post I came across today.

I know all you halloweenies that read this thing know about him, but since we are actually in the season, you less insane readers might want to check it out.

Zoo Date with the Girls

We took the nieces out for a date at the zoo. We had a blast.

Tough Auntie being tough. O.K. tough auntie with super tough girls.

Girls sliding down the cool slide.

A great time was had by all. This is probably the first time the Sub had car seats in it.

Proper Zombie Apocalypse Footwear

These babies arrived today and were on my doorstep when I got home from work. They fit like a dream and will be perfect for our trip. Comfortable, stylish, and bad ass. This is my first pair of Dr. Martens, I chose well.

O got some relatively good news yesterday. My enlarged aortic root is enlarged, but at the small safe level of enlargement. I'm not sure how we'll proceed, I need to get established with my new cardiologist, but the vacation is fine and I can still ride to work and jog with the dog. Mentally, I feel way better and expect to improve as I get used to my "condition". Deep sigh of relief.
This is an extreme example. The whole Marfan thing is still out there, because this is something people with Marfan have. There should be no surprise that I can't even fall in line and be easily diagnosed with some sort of disorder.

But I now have the coolest boots ever, so that's nice.

Old School "Sexy" Costumes

Well, why am I surprised that the "sexy" costume has been around at least since this 1947 photo? These wouldn't have been very practical in Chicago where I grew up. More at Neatorama's Halloween Blog.

Not So Good News

The Scream by Edvard Munch

It was a different lifetime ago when I went to the Art Institute of Chicago (briefly before the oh-so-smart move of dropping out) and we had this painting on exhibit. I really liked it. I think it reflected my life pretty well back then. Fast forward about 20 years and I find myself feeling like this poor guy again. I really didn't want to get into this, but it appears it is now a part of my life and we might as well have full disclosure.

There is something wrong with my heart. There I wrote it. I never wrote it before because I didn't know. Of course I've had those fleeting feelings of chest tightness only to realize it was muscular, but doing what I do for a living makes one jump when a little sharp headache sets in (stroke?) or lower leg pain (am I throwing a clot?). No, I'm not a hypochondriac. I don't give those moments much thought. Until recently.

I suddenly had a leaping  heart in my chest. It felt as if my heart had stopped and missed a beat. It is actually an extra beat otherwise called a Premature Ventricular Contraction, or PVC for short which seems hilarious to the haunter in me (a lot of us build all sorts of things out of PVC pipes). It seemed to start overnight, though in retrospect I'd had one or two in the past, but it never bothered me. Now I have them a LOT. I figured it was anxiety since I am super prone to anxiety. That's the route we took for treatment and I had an echocardiogram... over a month ago.

The cardiologist's office called and the receptionist had returned an angry call of mine (it was polite) because I had waited so damn long for the results and my stress wasn't getting any better because of it. She told me the report was completely normal. So imagine my surprise and horror when my Dr's office called tonight to tell me that there were some abnormalities and that I needed to come in to discuss the results.

So my heart did a bunch of its new flip-flops and I learned that I may actually have a problem common with people who have Marfan Syndrome. It has come up before and it is the whole reason I got sent in for the echocardiogram.

The hilarious part of this was a really weird exchange that was had and later deleted about Marfan on Pumpkinrot's blog a few years ago.

I really need that vacation NOW.

Happy October

The air in Boise has cooled and the relentless oppressive wildfire smoke that hung over town most of the summer is gone. The sky is blue, the sun isn't too hot, and the leaves are starting to change color and fall. Man, I have a LOT to do between now and the big night. This year I'm limiting new additions to the haunt to give myself a break. Last year saw the addition of 5 skeleton ghosts, more tombstones, a cemetery fence, singing pumpkins and on top of all of that, an automated light show with over 100 home made mini spotlights.

Happy October Everyone!
