I think I'm on to Something (Work in Progress)

Image
Also known as my favorite prop picture to date While one of my faves- the Frog Queen has been rubbing elbows with Rob Zombie, I've been plugging away at my three sisters witches a-la Macbeth/ Pumpkinrot .  I finally have all three heads finished except two that got weather sealed need matting so they aren't shiny and one needs sealed,... the basic heads are done.  I want matte finish skin with shiny lacquered eyes, eyelids, teeth, gums, and lips, think Alien style.    These girls will be frothing at the lips in ecstasy while they try to raise the dead.  Note: I don't plan to have any risen dead this year due to time constraints, my haunt story will follow soon.   After I got home from the morgue I tried a little "photo shoot" with the girls and an idea I am tossing around about hair.  Pumpkinrot's witches are hairless (and ear-less as are mine), but I am a big hair girl.  I like some of the photos I've found ...

Two Down...

I've got two of the three Macbeth/ Pumpkinrot style witch heads complete.  Making these things is so much fun, I can get lost for hours with the mache and paint.  Unfortunately I am also my own worst critic, and a crappy photographer.  These were inspired by Rot's creations, I've gotten a few compliments at work which is super cool, and, some strange looks from the cleaning man.  Oh well.   Here they are in plain light with a little green spot for fun: I showed them to Kyle tonight and he spent a while checking them out.  We are both very honest with each other, but I'm just don't think he is as interested in this stuff as I am.  Don't get me wrong, he is the most supportive person in the world when it comes to my attempts at creative outlets.  He told me tonight "they're all screaming", which is true.  When you make each tooth individually and hand paint each eyeball, you tend to want to show your work.  The third witch will have teet...

Prop Heads Part IV

Looks like I'm going to have to brush up on my Roman numerals before I'm done with this project.  The teeth turned out better than I could have imagined for a first time attempt.  The translucent white Sculpy clay baked into a perfect dingy nasty tooth color, probably not their intention, but great for me.  I inserted then right into the cured expanding foam and things really started to take shape.  I've studied the human skeleton including dentition for a while now and although they are obviously not the real deal, they are 100% better than anything I've seen sold in the stores or on other homemade props (with a few exceptions).  So I give myself an A- for the teeth.   The Devil's Workshop has the tutorial for the teeth.   I give myself a C for sculpting the face.  Don't ask me what I was thinking with the upper lip.  Did someone punch her in the face?  Well the jacked up teeth are on purpose, but that upper lip has got to go.  Lu...

Prop Heads Part II

I started fleshing out the first witch head by adding ping pong ball eyes, trimmed to fit sockets, and Sculptamold by Amco which is a paper based paste mache you mix with water.  I like how the word "night" ended up over the mouth BTW.   I am now a huge fan of the powdered paper mache "clay" medium.  Its easy to work with, is water soluble, has no fumes, and you can simply sand down or cut once its dry.  I'm very happy with the left- our left, eye and I have a long way to go with the nose.  For a hour's effort, I am really happy with the results.   I am also currently, as I blog, curing 20 individual teeth made with Sculpy translucent white clay.   The Devil's Workshop  has a great video on how to make them.  In the meantime, here is a little spookier version of the new "face job".   Did I mention the eyes are set up so I can put LED's in them?  Of yeah, I did already.
